Empowering Change

October 4, 2024— Solutions for the Migrant Crisis

At St. Jude League Community Development, we foster hopeful compassion and support programs that make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing hardship. Today several programs across the US and Canada continue to uplift vulnerable communities in the Claretian way of social justice. Today’s feature highlights the empowering Migrant Ministry at St. Edmund Center in Oak Park, IL, an organization dedicated to serving Venezuelan migrants who have fled their homeland for safety and stability.

Addressing an Urgent Need

Over the last few years, Venezuela has experienced a severe humanitarian crisis, forcing millions of its citizens to seek refuge in neighboring countries. These migrants often arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs, needing immediate support to rebuild their lives in unfamiliar environments. Migrant Ministry has become a vital lifeline for this population; it was founded in June 2023 due to an overflow of migrants who, with few other options, began camping at a nearby police station. The program began by providing food, clothing, and showers to asylum seekers. Now, led entirely by volunteers, the Ministry made St. Edmund Center its home in January offering a range of essential services, including:

  • Food and Water: Providing healthy meals and clean drinking water to sustain individuals and families during their journeys and resettlement.
  • Clothing and Shelter: Distributing donated clothing, blankets, and other necessities to help migrants stay warm and protected from the elements.
  • Legal Assistance: Offering guidance on legal rights and resources to navigate immigration processes and secure proper documentation.
  • Healthcare Access: Connecting migrants with medical professionals for basic healthcare needs and mental and spiritual health support, addressing both physical and emotional well-being.
  • Job Training and Education: Facilitating programs to enhance job skills and language proficiency, giving migrants a better chance at long-term success in their new communities.

Our Commitment to Action

We are honored to collaborate with the center in providing much-needed resources and support to Venezuelan migrants. Fr. Vittorio Bruscella, CMF, offers spiritual counseling, companionship, and meets with families that want to continue traditions like baptism and marriage. This partnership strengthens our shared mission of creating pathways to a brighter future for those in crisis. Through our donations and advocacy efforts, we aim to ensure that these families have the essentials they need to survive and thrive.

How You Can Help

The Migrant Ministry program is made possible through the support and generosity of people like you. We invite our supporters to join us in this effort by contributing in the following ways:

  1. Donate Resources: The Ministry accepts essential items like clothing, hygiene products, blankets, sheets, and towels to be distributed directly to migrant families. Financial resources enable the Ministry to purchase essentials above and beyond the in-kind donations.
  2. Volunteer Your Time: Whether it’s helping to sort donations or offering your skills in legal, medical, or educational assistance, your time can make a lasting impact. Please contact Celine, immigrantministry@gmail.com, for additional details.
