March 7, 2025— A New Mission, Casa Corazón

An integral ministry of the Claretian social justice mission has included advocating for immigrants right to compassion and dignity since 1902. Through the years, the Claretians have played a crucial role in helping immigrants adjust to American life, promoting integration while preserving cultural identity. This initiative continues that legacy by ensuring that new arrivals receive the support necessary to build a safer, more stable future than the lives they left behind.
In a southern Chicago neighborhood, the Claretians recently prepared three apartments to host families whose dire circumstances caused them to flee their homes and lives to seek safety and asylum in the United States. Known as Casa Corazón, these ordinary apartments have become extraordinary places of refuge offering residents stability and security for six months to a year.
Here hope takes on a tangible form, providing a safe and nurturing environment for immigrant families escaping the hopelessness of their home countries. This ministry, led by the Claretian Missionaries, reflects unwavering faith in the dignity and potential of every human being. Under the leadership of Fr. Javier, the Claretians continue their long-standing tradition of standing in solidarity with immigrants, offering not just shelter but also guidance, education, and a sense of belonging.
Fr. Javier hopes the ministry is able to extend the same support to other families in need, continuing the mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of migrant communities. The residence also has benefits unique to their proximity to other Claretian ministries. Seminarians, volunteers, and formators are able to provide direct support and accompaniment to these families. English classes, after-school programs for children, and practical skills training are among the many resources available to help them navigate life in the U.S. The goal is not just to provide shelter but to empower families with the tools they need to thrive independently. Fr. Javier recently shared stories of the journeys experienced by several of the current residents.

Among the families currently residing at Casa Corazón is Damellys and her loved ones. Having endured a grueling journey from Venezuela through the treacherous Darién Gap, she and her family sought safety in the United States. Despite the challenges, including time in detention and the struggle to adapt to a new culture, they remain hopeful. Damellys and her partner, both professional nurses, aspire to continue their careers in the U.S. while providing a better future for their daughter. The support they have received from Casa Corazón and Our Lady of Guadalupe School has been instrumental in their journey.
Rosangela and her family of four share a similar story of perseverance. Leaving Venezuela due to economic hardship, they traveled through seven countries, working along the way to sustain themselves. Now, thanks to Casa Corazón, they have found stability and an opportunity to rebuild their lives. Their children are thriving in school, and the family looks forward to a future where their dreams of a more stable life can become a reality.
For one single father of three, Casa Corazón has been a beacon of hope amidst uncertainty. Fleeing political persecution, he has faced many obstacles but remains steadfast in his resolve to build a better life for his children. Learning English and integrating into the community are his immediate goals, and with the support of Casa Corazón, he is taking meaningful steps toward achieving them. And recently, one of the residents secured her social security and work permit, a promising step toward self-sufficiency
With the observance of our annual Day of Hope less than a month away on Tuesday, April 2nd, the Casa Corazón ministry serves as a poignant reminder of the power of the Claretian’s community-driven efforts. It is a day to celebrate resilience, recognize the struggles of immigrant families, and reaffirm the commitment to providing tangible support. Through the collaboration of faith-based organizations, volunteers, and generous donors, the Day of Hope amplifies the impact of initiatives like Casa Corazón, ensuring that more families can receive the help they need.
